Example of Safety Planning
1. Anticipated Events (What do you think might happen?)
- He/she may come to my apartment
- He/She may threaten me
- He/She may start fighting and arguing with me
- He/She may stalk me
- He/She may kill me
- He/She may follow me
- He/ She may hit me
- He/She may attempt to strangle me
2. Proactive Steps (What could you do to prevent this from happening?)
- Let my neighbours know that if they hear yelling or screaming, they should call 9-1-1.
- Keep doors closed and locked at all times.
- Stay in a public area.
- Stay in well-lit areas if out at night.
- Put an extra phone in the bathroom.
- Put at least one lock on the bathroom door.
- Make friends, and be with them if you are out; at all times.
- Keep a charged cell phone with you at all times.
- Install security software on your computer. (Norton, McAfee, AVAST).
- Never go to the bathroom alone when out.
- Know your surroundings. (Who is around you?)
- Get more locks on doors and windows.
- Check locks every night – routine.
- Try not to panic – take some deep breaths
3. Reactive steps (What will you do if anything happens?)
- Call 9-1-1.
- Yell “FIRE” not “help”.
- Go into the bathroom and lock the door.
- Tell someone to call 9-1-1.
- Stay where there are people.
- Make noise and try to get people’s attention.
- Turn off GPS on your phone (ask Google how to turn off your location tracker on your phone.)
It is important to STAY “CALM”
